Pleurotus ostreatus, the oyster mushroom, is a common edible mushroom which is frequently used in Japanese, Korean and Chinese cookery as a delicacy and is considered a medicinal mushroom, since it contains statins such as lovastatin which work to reduce cholesterol.

Nutrients

Oyster mushroom has a delicious taste with soft texture and rich nutrients, high in protein but low in fat. It has more than 23 kinds of free amino acid including aspartate, threonine and serine in which lysine and methionine often absent in rice and beans are abundant. Besides, Vc and varieties of metallic elements (P, K, Te, Zn, Cu, Co, Mo) are present in it.

Medicinal use and research

Pleurotus ostreatus naturally contains lovastatin. Studies have shown they contain up to 2.8% lovastatin on a dry weight basis. Research with Pleurotus ostreatus demonstrated activity against various cancer cell lines and animal studies have shown an anticancer effect.
